Description: This work was inspired by my love of Tefillah, or prayer, and the challenge to create an image that conjures the state of mind--as well as the experience of self-examination involved in meditative prayer. The reviewing and simultaneous letting go. To me, Tefillah feels like the Universe expanding within my heart, mind and soul.
This process includes accepting and judging oneself at the same time, a kind of conscious paradox. Yet, for me at least that is what prayer involves.
I hope viewers will enjoy the spare composition and colors by themselves without analysis. One need not worry about the meaning. I chose to use round glass bowls, yarn and copper thread to evoke the repetitive ritualistic aspects of prayer.
I also wanted these items to evoke related objects used in prayer--such as Tefillin, the small leather boxes containing scripture. Also the leather straps representing the six Founders of Judaism.
When one binds oneself with Teffilin during at-home-prayer each morning one connects the heart, mind and soul and makes a connection to one's higher self. But Tefillah can be enjoyed anytime--whenever you feel Hashem calling you!
